Choosing between these designs
- Fewer strokes win. A two-character brand with one bar reads on a moving animal; a busy design blurs as the hide stretches.
- Plain before fancy. Registries clear simple marks more often, because there is less chance of colliding with an existing brand.
- Frames cost space. A boxed or circled brand needs a bigger iron for the same letter size — decide the position on the animal first.
- Say the name. “Rocking J D” and “Lazy R” are how the office will record it, so make sure the spoken name is one you want.
What to do with a design you like
- Open it in the designer and swap in your own initials.
- Download the SVG for the iron maker and the PNG for your application form.
- Search your state or provincial brand book before you order anything — a design is only yours once the office registers it.
